at home you can share your files, folders and printers with others but on public places you should refrain from all this. You can keep your data safe by applying some setting in windows.
1. Open the control panel
2.click on network and sharing centre
3. Click on change advanced sharing settings on left side above

Enable firewall
nowadays each operating system comes with firewall. To avoid unauthorized local users to keep intrusive nature in your computer this is the basic step. You can check it in this way:
control panel->system and security->windows and firewall. Sometimes directly in control panel windows firewall option you can get. From here you can on firewall and you can decide for which application you are allowing access. For it control panel->system and security->windows firewall->allow a program or feature.
